A Garden in Hell

"You gotta have style. It helps you get up in the morning. It's a way of life. Without it you're nobody. And I'm not talking about a lot of clothes" Diana Vreeland

Diana Vreeland was once editor of Harper's Bazaar and then Vogue Magazine at a time when I was noticing (long before my academic period--now that I am post-academic, I'm returning to interests of that earlier self).

Obviously, DV was not afraid to be herself. The interior designer, Billy Baldwin, who loved simplicity and lots of white, designed the red living room for DV and called it A Garden in Hell. I always smile when I think of it. BB also designed the iconic slipper chair which continues to charm us today.

Here's what I'm getting to: I love red and I love to post red and red doesn't look good with my new blog heading. The blog heading must be changed.

Charles, the designer son, is looking into the Grand Canyon this morning or driving onto Las Vegas.

Come back, Charles, I've changed my mind!

  2. This post reminded me of this video. Perhaps you'll enjoy it (it's "Advanced Style" basically in-your-face style for advanced-aged people):

  4. Glad you liked it. I certainly did. Don't forget to check out the "Advanced Style Videos" on the blog. It will get you smiling on a dreary afternoon. I enjoyed Tom Wolfe asking middle aged men to cover their necks because all necks corrode after age 35.

  5. I spy a floating head in the room from Hell. Is that the devil? Scary.
