Old woman's pathetic story

Yesterday, I was crazy to get started with the list. I cleaned and rearranged kitchen cabinets.
I straightened my closet and took out unused clothes. I cooked dinner. I was a woman on fire.
Then I stood on a tiny black stool to take down white pitchers above the kitchen cabinets and the stool turned and twisted. I hung on with my left arm.

That arm hurts so much today. I can raise it from the elbow up, but I can't raise it from the shoulder. It's not broken, but it's painful.

What is it about the universe that action is often rewarded with injury? Huh? Or is this a little old lady story? I read that people over sixty-five are the most prone to fall. Of course, I always think I'm the exception to all rules. I'm special.

It turns out I'm not a bit special. Again.

We went to Ace Hardware and bought a two-step ladder, and a quart of black paint for that stool.

Today was nursing-the-arm day, get-a-hair-cut-day, buy-a-ladder-day. Tomorrow is the one-armed woman fills a grocery cart with stuff for storage.

I am old woman. Hear me howl.

  1. Steve fell down while putting up our Christmas lights. Busted his ribs. He's not that old. But he does have all gray hair.

  2. Some days it is hard for me not to resent being human. I mean, really, would it have been that difficult for Heavenly Father to design us with super tough skin like Barbie? Or bendability like a stretch wrestler doll? Or a mind that came preprogrammed like a basic calculator with life preserving info already installed from birth? It would have helped a lot as a child to instinctively know that veggies are our friends. I would have spent a ton less time fighting cleaning my plate at supper.

I'm not asking for super human powers. I am just asking for abilities would make life here so much easier.

Congrats on the 2 step ladder. They are pretty sweet- how they fold up and all.

  3. Nothing to do with being old at all. I've been falling from childhood.

I think it is just a fact that when you are moving and climbing on chairs rather than sitting on a couch writing a novel you will be more prone to injury.

If it does have something to do with age than I'm in big trouble because it can't get any worse.

I hope your arm feels better soon!

  4. Oh. I did that. Ouch. Do mind if I give you advice? Shoulders don't heal themselves. They need physical therapy. Shoulder injuries just get worse instead of healing. I waited 3 months for my shoulder to heal itself and I got such a lecture from the therapist for not going in earlier. If it doesn't feel better soon, please have it seen.

And it doesn't have anything to do with age. I was 44 when that happened.

  5. Last year, hugely pregnant, I set out to put the Christmas lights up for the children. I brilliantly decided to do it in the dark and the rain and lost my balance and fell over into the flood light that lit up the front door. My open palm took a lovely burn from that lightbulb - the pain was so intense I just wallowed in the wet grass sobbing. It was the third fall I'd had that week. In that momnet, I think I would have taken broken ribs instead. So sorry about your arm. I think a pint of hand packed Baskin Robbins is in order to aid in your recovery.

  6. At least you fell from a step stool which sounds like an accident a normal person might have. In January I fell standing up from my desk chair (didn't realize my foot had fallen asleep). I ended up on crutches for 3 weeks and then a cane with ankle brace for 3 weeks after the crutches. We all have our less graceful moments, though some of those moments lead to more painful injuries than others. Hope you heal quickly.

  7. It is a pathetic story. But one we shall all tell. I hate the regular reminders that we are diminishing. And like a pack of wolves, I'm joining your howling today.
