What I learned in 2011

Ann Cannon listed 50 things she learned in 2011 in her Tribune column last weekend. She's brilliant, of course. I haven't learned 50 things in my entire life, or if I have, I've forgotten them.

Here's a weenie list:

1. I can beat winter until March. Then I want to see a crocus. If a crocus does not appear or is under three feet of snow, I am mentally blitzed.

2. I can still get a job.

3. Tom is an excellent caretaker when you need one. When I was lame, he took me on an excursion every single day.

4. Since I decided I didn't have to do anything I didn't want to do, I have wanted to do more things.

5. I can do pain.

6. Dutch cleanser and S.O.S. pads do the job better than those damned sprays.

7. Magical realism, symbols and surrealism in fiction don't interest me much anymore.

8. I want to live in downtown Salt Lake City for the rest of my life.

9. Just because you love a place doesn't mean you have to move there. You can go on vacation!

10. The King's English Bookstore is one of the most satisfying places to be in all the world.

11. I love apartments better than houses. I love elevators, swimming pools, heated garages.
and terraces.

12. Just because someone dies, doesn't mean you have to like them.

13. Words elude me. Thank heaven for watercolors.

14. I need lots of light, both real and metaphorical.

15. I have the power.

16. Life is better when you dress up.

17. My parents were better than I knew.

18. In fact, the adolescent view I insisted on keeping most of my life was a deception.

19. It is almost impossible to be honest.

20. You can't take on your children's pain.

Not too bad for after midnight.

What did you learn last year?

  1. Yours still seems like the graduate level learning. #s 7, 17, and 19 resonate with my learning too. I learned too don't do or say anything when overwrought.

  2. 1. I can do pain.
    2. I am also excellent at birthing babies at lightning-fast speeds.
    3. My husband is the greatest man alive.
    4. My husband works harder than anyone I've ever met, and when he wants a rest, then by-gum I give him a rest.
    5. My relatives do not want preaching from me. They just want love.
    6. Daily scripture study and prayer makes a huge difference.
    7. Cooking is a special kind of escape for me.
    8. I've carried my sister's pain around for eight years until she told me I could let it go. That was a very cleansing round of tears shed that night.
    9. My son stirs a love in my heart I didn't know existed.
    10. God hears me, and He cares.
