Church supper

Our ward has a yearly President's Day supper. Tonight was no different. There was a huge turnout. The recreation hall was decorated in flags and spirals and Washington and Lincoln profiles. I love this stuff.

Tom and I recalled the old Emigration Ward suppers for Washington's birthday (I don't think it was President's Day back in the day). It was always turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and beans, with cherry pie and ice cream for dessert. Jello salads.

What was unique was that the kitchen was on the basement level and the recreation hall was a floor up. Young men lined the stairwell conveying filled plates one to another until the young women claimed them at the top and served each person individually (serve from the left; pick up from the right). I think it was always the same Relief Society women stuck down in that small, square kitchen. All the turkeys were cooked in people's homes.

After dinner, there would be a program and maybe a drawing. I won a really ugly lamp once and was thrilled to run up on stage and carry it off.

I remember when we played Bingo in the ward to raise money for our new building. Bingo! Ahh, it was a different church then.

  1. I wish I lived during the time of church Bingo, raffles and women wearing strapless formals.
It sounds like a heck of a lot of fun to me.

  2. I don't see any strapless formals in the photo. My imagination likes it, though. Ha!

Bingo I could do. Not sure I could do: women in the kitchen cooking for, and YM and YW serving, the men. Of course, back then the men probably set up the tables and chairs.
