Friday oddities

I have gone through two Kindles and I'm taking my time buying another one.  Both of them broke, the last one within months of when I bought it.  I am buying books again, and I must say it's THRILLING.  Really, my whole body tingles when I buy books, especially hard back books.  Like gold.

I bought two today while we were in the city:  I bought a hard back copy of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE--my first hardback of that book, and read 20 pages while Tom was buying himself another art table in IKEA.  It's still excellent.

And I bought Nicole Hardy's CONFESSIONS OF A LATTER-DAY VIRGIN.  Nicole wrote a fine article for The New York Times last year (?) on her middle-aged virginity which has now become a book for Hyperion.  She's been wined and dined on radio and television, both regional and nationwide. In other words, people, this is a hot book, and Nicole is a hot writer.

She was my student, but like all students who have become successful authors, she already knew how to write before she took my class.  My job was always, "Keep doing what you're doing."

On the weather front:  We had the full range today.  Fog.  A big time snow storm that then turned into rain.  And now the sun is shining.  Cool.  I love cool.  Tom is already wearing long underwear.  (I mean, longer than his already long normal underwear).

I vacuumed.  I feel like I need a special diary for vacuuming.  I have never been so focused on this domestic chore.  This probably means I'm avoiding my real work.

I don't want to talk about it.

  1. I will, upon your recommendation, give Catcher another chance. I just didn't like Holden Caulfield that much.
I have tried to read with Kindle but I prefer a book in my hands. Vacuuming schmacuuming.

  2. I am going to start following your blog, because I read your essay-- Thoughts of a Grasshopper-- when I was a teenager and it has stayed with me for years. I always think about it and/or reread it when I get down on myself for not being more of an 'ant'. My mother is the anty-est ant ever and I'll never be like her. Sigh. I read Nicole Harding's book recently! I love anything written by thoughtful, truth telling Mormons. I wish we Mormons had a publishing company that published more 'liberal' Mormon writing. Another sigh. Here's one of my favorite quotes from Harding's book: ""It's not just cooking I avoid. It's pretty much every household task. I live in a condo so other people will do the planting, pruning, and weeding. Last week--all week--I washed my underwear in the shower because I didn't feel like doing laundry. Two pairs of my pants are hemmed with blue painters tape. The house gets cleaned when I'm expecting company, because I don't care if there are dishes in the living room, or if my clothes are strewn on the floor. Growing up, when other girls wanted to play house, I flat-out refused. I would only play school, or Solid Gold dancer."

  5. mother i can't believe you didn't like holden caufield....it is because he reminds you of the parts of my teenage (ok current) personality you didn't (don't) like? i read that book and within the first 5 pages had, what i do not lightly describe as, a spiritual experience.
