We went to the symphony!

Yes, we attended the Utah Symphony live for the first time in over a year (and took this cheesy selfie of ourselves). I was downright weepy to be sitting in symphony hall. The opening 11 minutes was Mahler's adagietto from the 5th Symphony,  a sublime piece of music, each note imbued with meaning: beauty, pain, grief, and longing. How did he do it? How can we bear it? How can we bear to be human?

The rest of the hour was Richard Strauss's comic Edelman Suites in nine movements with names such as "The Fencing Master" including a couple of minuets and courants. It sounded like music from the 2nd grade John Thompson series for the piano. I would have preferred Der Rosenkavalier.

The audience and orchestra were widely distanced from each other, all masked against disease, but we were together! It was a live concert. Bravos all around.
