I am reading THE THOUSAND AUTUMNS OF JACOB DE ZOET by David Mitchell. It is about the Dutch East Indies Company in Japan in 1799. Mitchell's writing is faultless, dense, and historically fascinating. A perfect midwinter read.
I have a stack of books waiting for me, including the new bio on George Washington, O Jerusalem (Which I started, but then the holidays came and got me and took me away to wrapping paper land), The Help, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, and a lot more. I need to get going. My kids just need to get back in school.
Rachel, I loved the Stieg Larrson series, but can't recommend them to everyone since they are so graphic and violent. Tell Ryan to call. I don't know how helpful I'll be.
True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey and Freedom by Jonathan Franzen are both on my bedside table, slated for my book group in January and February. I need to get started. Now that I've finished reading a draft of my friend's latest novel for her I will get right on it.
Too much. My husband gave me a kindle for Christmas and I feel morally obligated to use it. So far everything has been dystopian, though. The plots are starting to run together in a fascinating way.
(Hey Louise, you don't mind if your comments section becomes a conversation forum?) Jason, that is a great idea for The Help.
Wit is amazing. So well written. And well acted. I have watched the Emma Thompson version so many times. My husband thinks I am morbid, but I find it inspiring. Go, John Donne.
Everybody at the store who's read THOUSAND AUTUMNS has really, really liked it. So you're in excellent company.
Mostly I've spent a month NOT reading, which is why my brain feels deflated. I picked up an ARC called THE WINTER GHOSTS by Kate Mosse at the store--I think I'll try that.
We'be been listening to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Entertaining. Graphic.
ReplyDeleteRyan would like to call and chat about publishing. He's doing research for a client friend. Is that ok?

ReplyDeleteWolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel. It won the Booker prize. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

ReplyDeleteI just discovered Elizabeth Scott and have been working my way through some of her YA books.

ReplyDeleteWhat to Expect When You're Expecting. Scares the crap out of me every time!

Before the movie hype came out, I chose True Grit for book club.
ReplyDeleteMay the cowboy gods glare down on me and cinch my neck in their lassos, but SNORE! Dry, dry, dry.
But I liked the characters so much I want to see the movie.
