The Sound of Music

Tonight we watched The Sound of Music and reminisced of our stay in Saltzburg two years ago.  "We saw that," we cooed, "We had our picture taken there."  It was Sarah who wanted to take the Sound of Music tour, so she and Sam and I went and enjoyed it thoroughly, while Tom stayed back at the hotel glad to be out of it.

I first saw this movie the summer it came out in 1964 after I was married.  I went with my friend, Christine, to the Center Theater for an afternoon showing.  We were both charmed.

I had my hair cut like Julie Andrews and dyed blonde and sometime fooled little girls into thinking I was she.  Sigh.

I don't think that I've seen the movie for seven years before tonight.  It wears well.  And Christopher Plummer is downright sexy.

Do you remember when you first saw The Sound of Music?  Who were you with?

  1. I saw it with my family at the Scera in Orem. I memorized the movie. I don't remember tons from my childhood, but I remember the feeling I had watching Maria & Co. Awestruck. All these decades later, if someone says, "Let's start at the beginning," I am compelled to reply, "A very good place to start."

  2. I think I saw it for the first time with my parents, when it was shown on t.v. My dad went to see it 4 or 5 times in the theater when it came out. I've always loved it. If my kids are sick on Sunday and can't go to church, that is the movie I put on. To keep us all occupied and entertained.

  3. I played Marta in the Sound of Music in our high school music production in 2nd grade. My brother Joel was Friedrich, Allen was Rolf and my brother Steve was an extra.

I first saw the movie on TV the night before Allen's high school graduation. We had just finished the first half when we heard a car honking up the driveway. My little brother Jake and I ran upstairs to see Jen and Nate, who had driven all the way from Provo to Show Low, AZ (about 500 miles) in one day to surprise all of us. It was just fabulous.

  4. I saw it in Virginia as a child with my family and loved it. It has remained one of my favorite movies.

I remember thinking it was about a different, earlier time period and that the actual folks it portrayed must have been old by the time the movie was made. A few years ago I had a slight shock when I realized that the Sound of Music was made around 20+ years after the events it portrayed, and that to youth today the early 1990s would seem just as "ancient" a time period as the "Sound of Music" seemed to me when I first saw it. Thinking things through like that made me feel old for a few minutes. Then I decided it was best to focus on something else.

  5. This is a particularly vivid childhood memory because we put on our best clothes and drove ALL THE WAY FROM PROVO TO SALT LAKE to see it at the old Villa Theater. What a grand theater that was! I went with my parents, for sure. My brothers and grandparents could have been there, too, now that I think about it. I loved it. Loved it.

I will say that I don't love it as much as I did, though. I saw it a few years ago on the big screen at Kingsbury Hall and I just felt like slapping everyone in it except for Christopher Plummer who had this vaguely sinister air I found appealing.
