Andy Williams

Andy Williams died and I'm feeling bad about it, but I can't say too much, because Tom sneers and murmurs sourly whenever his name is mentioned. We took a walk this afternoon and I mentioned my sadness about Andy again, and Tom just came out with it: "I thought he was smarmy."

Smarmy is my word. I've always considered myself as having excellent "smarm radar." Did I miss something about Andy Williams? I liked THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW in the 60's and, later, the Christmas shows with his family and the Osmonds all wearing Christmas sweaters, singing AND generally being charming.

I dislike Christmas sweaters now and have for some time. In fact, I don't like Christmas all that much.

I never liked Lawrence Welk. Never. Hated that show, although I would have liked to be one of the Lennon Sisters.

I liked Perry Como too. Was he smarmy?

No, because Perry Como didn't seem to care if we liked him or not.

I listened to Andy Williams singing Moon River a few minutes ago. It was lovely and reminded me of when I was young. Young was great, wasn't it? I miss being young and I miss Andy Williams.

It is what it is.

I have great affection for Andy Williams, actually. Loved his voice. And his Christmas specials were a happy part of my childhood.

If fake tan, veneers and hair plugs make a man smarmy, Andy is definitely SMARMY.

Even those of us with extremely sensitive smarm radars have a small margin of error. I have this one album of EFY music that is seriously the worst thing ever, but I love to play it at full blast. And not even ironically either. It feels good to get that off my chest.

Andy Williams and his contemporaries could actually carry a tune without benefit of today's computer-enhancing equipment. Heck - I'd venture to guess lots of them could even read music. I'd love a baritone tune by Bing Crosby any day over what's offered nowdays.

(That just made me sound old.)
