My earliest memory
This, then, is my earliest memory: My mother sews me a lamb costume out of white flannel. I am three years old and have a part in the church Christmas program. I stand at the edge of the table, where she works, looking up as she pushes the flannel into the needle with one hand and turns the handle of the sewing machine with the other. I am elated that this will be my costume.
Later, I am wearing my lamb costume on stage. I have one line, which I say in a loud, confident voice, and the audience breaks into laughter. I am surprised by their laughter, but I like it. I like making people laugh. I will like it for the rest of my life.
