While we're all complaining about our disappointment with the writing of Downton Abbey, let me sing the praises of Sherlock Holmes, starring the angular-faced Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson.
First of all, is the name "Benedict Cumberbatch?" not straight out of a Thomas Hardy novel? How could one be blessed with such a name? I smile every time I see it.
The young Holmes is so abrasive and rude, I sometimes want to smack him in the side of the head, but the writers let Watson smack him for us. The two men are the finest tag team since Abbot and Costello. I love the show's contemporary stylishness, the fast editing, and the return of the HAT! They brought back that awful hat with the earflaps, and Holmes is photographed in it. When the photo shows up in the newspaper, Holmes snaps, "That isn't my hat!" But in the beginning of the third season, he claims it.
Beautiful.
Everything you say is true, but it requires so much concentration! The CBS version, "Elementary," is so much easier to watch! I've saved Episode 1 of Benedict Cumberbatch to watch again and see if I can appreciate it more. Your commentary gives me good head start on that!
ReplyDeleteI recently started watching it and am madly in love. I also want to get a dog now and name him Benedict Cumberbatch.
ReplyDeleteAmen to all of the above.
ReplyDeleteExactly. What Ann said. I clapped after I saw the first episode. Did you know the actress who plays Mary is Martin Freeman's actual life partner? And the actors who play Sherlock's parents in season three (where, yes, he embraces the hat) are Bennedict Cumberbatch's actual parents? The whole thing is just so damn spiffy. Downton Abbey has kind of lost my attention but Sherlock can go on and on and on as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyDeleteThe first episode of this season of SHERLOCK is my favorite episode so far. My husband and I laughed our way through it. I agree that Benedict and Martin have amazing chemistry.
ReplyDeleteYes. Delightful. Always.
ReplyDeleteWhy are you complaining about the writing of Downton Abbey, yet sing the praises of Sherlock Holmes. The angular-faced Benedict Cumberbatch in Holmes is no match for the wonderful toys they keep adding to the kitchen in Downton. The egg rack is my next project when my tools thaw in the spring.
ReplyDeleteJerry, that isn't writing. You're enjoying the props.
DeleteLouise, Is the "angular-faced Benedict Cumberbatch" in Holmes a writer, prop or toy? We all have our reasons for watching.
DeleteSee the next blog.
DeleteI love all of the shows, Downtown Abbey, Sherlock and Elementary. All of them are way, way better than any reality show out there. I just wish there were even more good shows for us to rank in order of terrificness. I am so lucky to have satellite tv so I can save the good shows and watch them all.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried Sherlock, but I am considering it since DA is a huge disappointment this season.
