Placenta on the menu

So I don't want to keep this information to myself.  There are women who eat their own placentas.  I read it in The New York Times in an article describing "the placenta project."  It led me to an article in The Atlantic Monthly":

"It can be cooked (usually steamed) then sliced, dehydrated, and encapsulated into a pill. Sometimes women freeze it in small chunks and blend it into a smoothie."

I googled "eating the placenta" and there were recipes.

Have I been living in a cave?  Three births and I have passed up eating my own placenta filled with delicious, bloody nutrients?  Could I sue my obstetrician for not letting me know  that I was making dinner when I pushed out those babies and their follow-up?  Imagine hunkering down on the delivery table and gnashing your teeth into that gorged pulp.

It's taking time for me to get my mind around this.

  1. I read about this in "Good Housekeeping" magazine just last night. There, they reported that some moms give the placenta to the kid on his/her birthdays. Nothing says, "happy birthday" like Placenta Pill.

  3. Google image search 'placenta teddy bear'. See how much fun that is?
Apparently, nutrients in the placenta can help ward off post-partum. I've heard some interesting things from the doula in my life and the recipe that her sister knew about after she had her 5th kiddo.

  4. I am surprised at how many women I know that did this or plan on doing it. FB has been a wonder and a curse as I have online conversations I can't imagine ever having in real life.

  6. I think humans are the only mammals that don't eat their placenta. Well, apparently some humans do, but they are all together a different breed. Before you know it, they'll be licking off the afterbirth too.
