It wasn't until I read Ann Cannon's two blogs (The Writer's Corner) about TV watching that I realized I hadn't seen any of the new fall offerings. It isn't because I don't like TV; I do, but I watch most of it on my laptop streaming HULU or HULU PLUS where the ads are much shorter.
I watch CASTLE on Tuesday mornings, MODERN FAMILY on Thursday mornings, THE OFFICE on Friday morning and so on. I also watch HOUSE, and LAW AND ORDER, SVU.
On TV, I watch Masterpiece Theater on Sunday nights. It's a ritual. On Saturday nights, I watch NEW TRICKS, a British detective show on PBS. And almost every night at eleven, I watch INTERNATIONAL HOUSE HUNTERS. It's irresistible. I also like watching the bitchy real estate brokers on BUYING NEW YORK on Thursday nights on HGTV.
I was a huge fan of Helen Mirren as detective chief inspector, Jane Tennison in the British PRIME SUSPECT, so when I saw there was an American version, I was reluctant to watch.
But last week, I watched the first three hours of the series and though it isn't quite as understated as its British counterpart, it is edgy and character driven. Although, I hate the fedora and the gum chewing. But oh vel. I'm a fan.
I also watched the first three hours of REVENGE, which has the nastiest bunch of characters since DAMAGES, which I miss terribly. REVENGE reminds me of DAMAGES--it even uses that disorienting treatment of time where you watch a scene in the distant past, one in the present, and then the next scene begins with "Six months earlier." Really? Chronology is evidently not hip.
I like DAMAGES better than REVENGE, because it allows more time for both character and story development. And Glenn Close in those Ralph Lauren sunglasses is to die for. REVENGE moves quickly in one hour segments of someone's downfall. Characters sneer smiles at each other. I hate it. And I'll keep watching it, because it's so completely trashy.
I don't watch situation comedies until someone I trust tells me I will love it.
So what are you watching?
LOUISE. Watch Parks and Recreation. Better yet, start with Season 2 and wander on through, but don't watch Season 1 or you'll hate the show.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have a deep and abiding love for Dr. Who. Dr. Who. Watch "Blink" in Season 3 and let me know if you're not a convert to the spacey wack madness.
Anything on Bravo - Real Housewives, Rachel Zoe Project, Millionaire Matchmaker. All shows to make you stupid. Then I get smart again when I watch PBS Kids with JW.
ReplyDeleteI own and re-watch over and over The West Wing. I'm also hooked on a tricky little show called Ringer. It has a fun premise. What would happen if your twin sister died and you took her place without anyone knowing? Viva TV!!
ReplyDeleteI have watched a few Parks and Recreation (first year) and wasn't sold.
ReplyDeleteI watched Dr. Who with David Tennant in Vienna and really liked it, but I won't watch it here.
What's with that?
I hate reality shows except HGTV . Well, Tom got me into Pickers and I like Antique Roadshow as well.
I really like THE GOOD WIFE, obvious affair notwithstanding.
ReplyDeleteI never watch TV anymore-no time. I used to watch Gilmore Girls (even got the hubs into that one) and Arrested Development (still my favoritest TV show ever) and Big Bang Theory (for the physicist within). Wow, remember Dawson's Creek? I am so 90's. I just watch movies on Netflix now when I have time...preferably BBC period romance types.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading this.
ReplyDeleteAm enjoying, as you know, REVENGE for the trash factor. Also the setting. And I didn't like Parks and Rec the first year, but I am liking it now--especially love the meat-eating boss, Ron. I like THE GOOD WIFE, too.
Am I the only person in the world who watches PARENTHOOD? It's on Tuesday nights, I think NBC? Not sure, I watch it on HULU. I LOVE the characters and the writing. Very realistic.
ReplyDeleteAnd I also heart Ron and his 'meat and bun' burgers on Parks and Rec.
I think if I were a multi millionaire, I would devote my life to destroying others. What else is there to do? I like Modern Family and Happy Endings. I feel better about my parenting and my friends after.
ReplyDeleteLOST and 24 and House and Arrested Development and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and This Hour Has 22 Minutes are all family favorites. We own numerous seasons of each and my husband and children are known to spend many late holiday nights viewing them. I don't watch TV and so am completely boring whenever people start talking about pop culture. But I love love love NBA basketball and have watched several games a week. Now that they aren't playing this year, I might have to broaden my repetoire.
ReplyDeleteI also like THE GOOD WIFE and have been enjoying PAN AM. I read your helicopter post and it made me think of this: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=17608945
ReplyDeleteTragic and yet I also laughed.
